NSW boat licence frequently asked questions...
How do I get a NSW boat licence?
It’s quite simple when you do our course. Call us, have a chat & book a time, date & location that suits you. Then, on successful completion of our course, you’ll get a certificate which must be taken, with a logbook, to Service NSW whereupon a licence can be issued same day.
You’re already qualified so no further testing will be required!
Can I use a NSW boat licence interstate?
The NSW boat licence can be used across Australia if you’re going on holidays.
If you permanently move interstate, you will have to change your licence over to that states licence.
When do I need a NSW boat licence?
A NSW general boat licence will allow you to legally operate a vessel over 10 knots (18.5 km/h) throughout NSW & ACT waterways. It allows you to drive any recreational boat, regardless of length, engine power etc, so long as it’s not for commercial purposes.
You must carry a NSW boat licence when doing anything for which the licence is required, and produce it for inspection when requested by a relevant authority (NSW Police, RMS etc.).
How do I complete the logbook?
Students require practical experience to obtain a NSW boat licence. This is done via the NSW boating practical logbook.
To obtain a NSW boat licence with our course, you need to complete a practical boating logbook with a licenced person who has had their licence for 3 or more years.
This is done independently of the course and can be done before or after your attendance.
To complete the logbook, you go boating without a licence up to the speed of 10 knots (18.5 kmph). Timing is not dictated, but we recommend taking your time and doing it correctly.
Those with prior boating experience in the past 12 months can backdate to those trips.
You can download a copy off our website, visit Service NSW or pick one up at the course. There are no fees in relation to the logbook.
Where can I get it done?
We conduct licence courses every few days across Sydney. Upcoming dates/times/locations can be found here.
Bookings can be made online or via phone with our friendly office team.
Please note that we typically book out roughly 1-2 weeks in advance.
